This is the will of God for your life: PURITY

Purity is defined as "freedom from immorality, especially of a sexual nature". We live in times where purity is looked down upon, even amongst Christians. It is so scary because this is a command to us and not a matter of Christian liberty. So what could be the problem? Do people now have such a low view of God? Is sexual purity being taught as a choice at church? If ever being encouraged, are people given the tools to navigate everyday life with all these temptations around us? The questions are endless but I know that according to the Bible we are to flee from sexual immorality. "Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body." (1 Corinthians 6:18-20)

So what is sexual immorality? It is any sexual activity done outside of the boundaries of a marriage between a man and woman. Sexual immorality includes but is not limited to sex before marriage, pornography, masturbation, sexual thoughts, homosexual sex, consuming sexual entertainment in the form of books, music and TV shows. One thing people say is that the Bible does not say that sex before marriage is a sin, which is not completely true. In 1 Corinthians 7:2 Pauls says, 'but because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each wife her own husband'. From this passage alone we see that God intended sex to be experienced in marriage. (Hebrews 13:4)

The goal in life is not to end up with a partner though. A lot of people have concerns about what if they do not get married. I was once like that because according to me that meant my purity would have been in vain. We need to be content in God being our all because even marriage will eventually pass away. Purity is not something only pursued as a single person. Sexual immorality can creep into marriage in the form of pornography or masturbation. So marriage does not solve the problem of sexual immorality. If you cannot discipline yourself now, how are you going to survive marriage? The devil wants to see you disobeying God and whether single or married, he will make sure that you do the opposite of what you are supposed to do, whether is lusting after other people or denying your own partner sex.

Do not be fooled, sexual immorality is a serious offense against God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-10) Jesus says that if someone looks at a woman lustfully, then they have already committed adultery in the heart. (Matthew 5:28) I know society has normalised sex before marriage and other immoral acts but as children of a Holy God, we are to deny our flesh. God is still the God of the Bible. Just because something is normal, does not make it right. God promises to sanctify us in this regard. It is his will to see us abstaining from sexual immorality. (1 Corinthians 6:11, 1 Thessalonians 4:3)

I got myself a purity ring as a reminder to what Christ has saved me from. A ring or a promise you make to God does not sustain you, but this is to remind me that God promises to sanctify me in this regard and that purity is a possible journey even after you have messed up before. Even though I am no longer a virgin (you can read my testimony here), I got one because purity is not synonymous with virginity. It is more than just being a virgin. It is good that there are people out there who have kept themselves but that does not necessarily mean they have been pure. There is no one out there who has kept themselves 100% away from sexual immorality. The good news though is that there is forgiveness for you and me. If you confess your sins then God is faithful to forgive and cleanse you of all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9) In Christ, there is no more condemnation and you are a new creation. (2 Corinthians 5:17) I hope God grants you the grace to pursue purity. It is not an easy journey but I promise you there is nothing more fulfilling than obeying God, living for His glory and offering your body as a living sacrifice. (Romans 12:1-2)

Yours in Christ
